Paint Inwood!-June 2019
All I ever wanted to do was color. At first with crayons and then I moved onto paints as soon as I could. Being from Greek Cypriot heritage, there were always beautiful craft objects around all my families homes. Colorful baskets, beautiful ceramic vessels and bright handmade woven tapestries. I come from a family of makers. I didn’t realize how much of an influence that had on my art till much later. When I first went to the MET Museum and saw similar things displayed as art, I knew it was in my blood!
I have an intense love for the outdoors and am my happiest when outside painting. Even during the winter month I paint looking out a window, or in a greenhouse. I am always looking for that pop of nature, flowers and colors.
I’m a born and raised New Yorker! So, painting outdoors can mean sitting in the middle of Broadway, going to Central Park for the millionth time or finding a secret community garden. Honestly there is never a lack of subject. I love finding a place and thinking, “how did I not know this existed?”
I gather energy from the places, movement, and life around her. I often paint together in groups. Quite often with NYC Urban Sketchers or with a group of artists that I have been painting together since high school. This has created a unique artist dialog for me, finding a location, discussing composition, and completing the project in the chosen spot. We often critique each other’s work, share materials, and offer support. I went to the HS of Art and Design in NYC, where it was mandatory to paint “en plein air”, on the subway ride home, or weekends in the neighborhood. I never stopped that style of painting. I graduated from the RISD in Printmaking and a minor in Ceramics.
For the past eleven years I have been painting and drawing with the local chapter of an international artists group called NYC Urban Sketchers. For five of those years, I was a member at large on their board of director and their event coordinator. My involvement included organizing the last two drawing events called “Portrait Party.”, organizing, and acquired sponsors for the 2020-2025 annual meeting, and Workshop coordinator.
