Paint Inwood!-June 2019

All I ever wanted to do was color. At first with crayons and then I moved onto paints as soon as I could. Being from Greek Cypriot heritage, there were always beautiful craft objects around all my families homes. Colorful baskets, beautiful ceramic vessels and bright handmade woven tapestries. And then to my amazement, when I first went to the MET and saw similar things displayed as art! It was in my blood!

I went to the High School of Art and Design in NYC, where it was mandatory to paint outside “en plein air”, on the subway ride home, or on weekends in the neighborhood. I never stopped that style of painting. I have an intense love for the outdoors and have been on some amazing treks. I am happiest when painting “en plein air.” I am seriously focused on that style of painting presently, mostly using watercolors and oils.

I graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Printmaking. My styles of art making has a connection in the steps and processes it takes to complete the tasks. From setting up a plate to etch, finding the perfect spot to set up a painting to prepping a perfect paint palette for the chosen spot. I recently took a watercolor making class at Kremer Pigments to create the perfect palette of colors. I am a details person when it comes to the finished product.

For the past eight years I have been painting and drawing with the local chapter of an international artists group called NYC Urban Sketchers. I am a member at large on their board of directors. My recent involvement has been helping organize the last two drawing events called “Portrait Party.” I also organized, found a location and acquired sponsors for the 2020-2023 annual meeting. I currently am the Workshop coordinator. In the past two years, we have run about 12 workshops a season with local and international urban sketchers.
